travis theater closing

I see the UA theater in Travis is closing (turning into a gym?)...and I was just getting re-aquainted with it!. Too bad, as it was easier to get good seats, and they showed some limited-release films that the one in the Harbor did not.
Damn! I like the regular kind of movie theater seats! You know, the "non-stadium" type. It reminds me of the old days of going to the movies and LOOKING UP at the screen in awe and wonder. The movies truely were "Larger than life!"...
With "stadium seating" most people in the theater "look down" on the movie. (Something one should never do) and forget about negotiating those stairs in the dark. Ever come into a darked theater from out side and try to find a seat while climbing stairs? Only owls and bats could, methinks.
One great place with the correct seating is lowesjersey.org
They are showing Godzilla, Dr. Strangelove and many other flicks "old-school" style. That means in a fantastic big old theater, no commercials, regular seats, and cheap admission! The on-screen dialog wonderfully booms and echoes just like the old days!
Brings a tear to me eyes, it does...

I'm 24 and remember going to that Travis theater as a child. Thing is, they let that place go to pot years ago. It got so bad that they didn't even show which movies they were playing on the huge board, they just told you to call to find which movies were playing. The whole place looked like a deserted wasteland, much like the old Sunset lanes did over there on Richmond Avenue until they put *gasp* a Duane Reade! Then they took down other quality lanes like Colonial down on Bay street (housing now, I think) and even Victory Lanes. Such a shame...now another great instutition (Industrial Television) is leaving...say it isn't so guys! Please, we need more!

I'll take stadium seating any day of the week! Plus, reclining seats and extra leg room make for a better movie experience. Maybe taller people never realized this, but nothing sinks a movie experience faster than getting there early to get a good seat and then some 6'something guy sits smack dab infront of you, blocking most of the screen.

But, I do have very good memories of the Travis -- back when it was the "new" theater and it was the place to see movies back in day. And, they did play movies you couldn't catch at the other theaters on SI. But, we stopped going there the evening cops came into our theater (while the movie was in progress) and arrested a couple a teens and there was a rash of cars being broken into that were parked way in the back lots.. I'm old, I like my movie experiences crime-free.

I think they were the last theater I remember that used to play the lava lamp with music before the showtime....now, it all commercials.
